Div on Januarie

De Villiers also denied that Enrico Januarie's brush with the law - he had a warrant of arrest issued against his name last week after failing to appear in court on a drunk driving charge - had contributed to his non-selection.

"It [Januarie's legal woes] had nothing to do with it," De Villiers told the media.

Januarie's misfortune opened the door for the Bulls' long-serving second-string scrumhalf Heini Adams.

And the Bulls' other newcomer, Francois Hougaard, is in the squad as a utility.

"If you look at how blessed we were with Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn, it never ends," De Villiers said.

"We're looking to use him the same way as Ruan and Frans ? as a utility back."

Another player who will change positions is Lions loosehead prop Heinke van der Merwe, who with Jannie du Plessis will be used as one of captain John Smit's back-ups at tighthead.

Although Van der Merwe hasn't played since undergoing knee surgery in April, De Villiers is confident he will come good on the tour.

Other selections that raised the eyebrows include Griquas loose forward Davon Raubenheimer and former SA Under-19 captain Alistair Hargreaves.

Those, along with Maku, effectively the Bulls' third-choice hooker, are all players De Villiers worked with at junior level.

"They're brilliant players and if you were to tick boxes in terms of their ability, three out of four would be ticked."
