Lions clinch final berth

A career best spell of bowling by Richard Cameron and some fine
bowling in the final over by Robbie Frylink saw the Highveld Lions
secure a place in the Standard Bank Final when they beat the Titans
by 10 runs at Supersport Park on Friday.
The Lions won the first semi-final at the Wanderers last week.
Needing to score 187 to win, the Titans could only manage 176
for seven in their 20 overs. They got off to a flying start.
Blake Snijman made his intentions clear when he hit Robbie Frylink
for six off the first ball of the innings. He blazed his way to his
fifth Pro20 half century off 24 balls, smashing five fours and
three sixes.
He shared a first wicket stand of 83 with Gulam Bodi, with
Snijman very much the senior partner, but the partnership ended
when Snijman was run out by wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile.
Bodi was joined by AB de Villiers, fresh from two successive
centuries in India, but fell in the next over, leg before wicket to
Cameron for 26.
The wheels came off for the home side after Bodi's departure, as
wickets began to tumble while the required run rate rose steadily.
McKenzie took a superb catch at point to dismiss De Villiers for 10
and Titans captain Jacques Rudolph went soon after, caught by
Alviro Petersen for 26.
Cameron ended his spell by bowling Heino Kuhn for 13 with his
last ball, to finish with career best figures of four for 23. His
previous best had been one for 18 against the Eagles.
Dale Steyn, who has been working hard on his batting, tried
valiantly to keep his team in the running, hitting a boundary and
two towering sixes, but he fell in the final over, with the Titans
needing another 21 runs. He was caught on the boundary by Petersen
for 22, as he tried for another six. Frylink struck again with the
penultimate ball, when he bowled Farhaan Behardien for 18.
Earlier, Jonathan Vandiar smashed 68 off 43 balls, including six
fours and four sixes, to help the Lions to the highest score of the
season. It was Vandiar's second Pro20 50, and came off just 30
balls.
He and Neil McKenzie got the Lions off to an excellent start,
with an opening partnership of 70, before McKenzie was stumped by
Heino Kuhn off the bowling of Paul Harris for 34. Harris took two
more wickets, with Richard Cameron caught on the boundary by Gulam
Bodi for seven and Vaughn van Jaarsveld caught by AB de Villiers
for 16.
Basheer Walters chipped in with two wickets, dismissing Vandiar
leg before wicket for 68 and Alviro Petersen caught by Snijman for
five.
The victory was a massive one for the Lions, who have had
several dismal seasons since winning the Pro20 in 2007.
They will meet the Warriors in Port Elizabeth next Friday, and
their victory also means they have earned a place in the lucrative
Champions League in September.
