Chiefs down Celtic to clinch league title
Mon, 23 May 2005 12:00
Kaizer Chiefs completed a remarkable comeback in the league as they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 at the Vodacom Park Stadium on Sunday afternoon to successfully defend their Castle Premiership title.
Title rivals Orlando Pirates were at one stage just 45 minutes away from clinching the championship as they took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break against Bush Bucks, while Chiefs and Celtic ended the first 45 minutes with the scores locked at 0-0.
However, it was not to be as Chiefs put on a fine display in the second half to put two goals past Celtic, while a late Bush Bucks goal put paid to Pirates' title dreams.
The first half of the game in Bloemfontein was played at a furious pace, with Celtic taking the game to the visitors and generally keeping them on the back foot.
Amakhosi only had two real chances in the first stanza, with Derrick Spencer firing over the bar with a long range effort in the 17th minute, while Scara Ngobese's shot from outside the box in the 38th minute flew into the side netting.
Chiefs finally got the breakthrough they were looking for when a route one ball fell to Mbesuma, who used his strength to hold off a defender and stab the ball home in the 54th minute.
Eight minutes later Mbesuma gave Chiefs a two goal cushion when Tenashe Nengomasghe threaded through a delightful ball and the young Zambian made no mistake as he slotted the ball under Celtic keeper Vincent Ongandzi.
Amakhosi saw out the remaining minutes without any difficulties, sending their supporters into ecstasy as referee Ace Ncobo blew the final whistle.
Coach Ted Dimitru, in his final season with the club, has now achieved the remarkable feat of twice having won back-to-back titles. once with Sundowns and now with Chiefs.
