He is considered by many to be the natural choice to start at flyhalf for the Springboks, but Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has warned against selecting 19-year-old sensation Johan Goosen too soon.
Goosen was one of the stars of the 2012 Super Rugby season before being cut down by a serious shoulder injury, and with incumbent Bok flyhalf Morne Steyn continuing to struggle with his form this year, the chorus is growing to rush the Cheetahs star in to take the number 10 jersey.
But Drotkse is not singing from the same hymn sheet, preferring instead to exercise caution with his team's most prized asset. And while some might believe the Cheetahs coach may have ulterior motives, it is worth remembering that Goosen has only just returned from a four-month lay-off.
The Cheetahs flyhalf played in the match against Griquas over the weekend and was understandably a little rusty. Rushing him into the Bok set-up so soon after such a serious injury would not be the wisest move.
Drotske, for one, does not want to take any chances with Goosen.
"I'm happy with his 50 minutes on the field," Drotske told supersport.com, "He was rustly and missed a few kicks at posts and to the sideline, but the match aspect was definitely a good one for him to be in.
"I don't think he should be called up to the Springboks just yet. I'm not just saying that out of a Free State viewpoint, but rather because he is a young player who has been out with a big injury for four months. What use will it be to make him play in difficult conditions in Australia and New Zealand? It just doesn't make sense.
"I think he needs three or four games for us to get his confidence and self-belief up and then he will be 100 per cent ready when the Springboks return from overseas to play at home. That would be my call on how to manage him."
