Sheffield Wednesday caused a League Cup surprise as the Championship club beat Premier League side Fulham 1-0 in the second round at Hillsborough on Tuesday.

Dave Jones' team have enjoyed a remarkable run since the former Cardiff boss was appointed in March and Fulham were the latest victims of their renaissance.

After winning promotion as League One runners-up last season, Wednesday have taken seven points from their first three games back in the Championship and they were deserved winners against Fulham thanks to Gary Madine's 50th minute penalty.

Fulham, with seven Premier League goals in their opening two games this season, managed just one effort on target throughout the 90 minutes as they limped out of the competition.

Damien Duff was a late replacement for Bryan Ruiz, injured just before kick-off, as Fulham made four changes from the team beaten 3-2 at Manchester United on Saturday.

There was still no Clint Dempsey, seemingly an outcast given his hankering for a move to Liverpool, and Moussa Dembele was not part of the 18 following reports that Tottenham had made a bid for the Belgian midfielder.

After a tight first half, Wednesday edged in front five minutes into the second period.

Chris Maguire surged into the penalty area and was tripped by Stephen Kelly, allowing Madine to send Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer the wrong way for his first goal of the season.

That brought a response from Fulham, who had the ball in the net in the 63rd minute, only for captain Brede Hangeland to be ruled offside when he headed home a Matthew Briggs cross.

Wednesday goalkeeper Stephen Bywater then saved a glancing Briggs header, but other than that he was untroubled as the hosts held on with ease.
