South Africa's hopes of returning to the Davis Cup World Group next year suffered a setback on Thursday when Rick de Voest was forced out of their play-off against Canada.
De Voest, the world number 170, was to have been his country's top singles player in the tie in the absence of 37th-ranked Kevin Anderson, who opted out of the match.
"Unfortunately I injured my wrist during practice this week and am not able to compete in #DavisCup. Am disappointed. Good luck to Team SA," tweeted de Voest.
Izak van der Merwe, ranked 188, will lead the South African team, supported by 39-year-old John-Laffnie de Jager, who doesn't have a singles ranking and is also the team captain.
Raven Klaasen, the world 568, and Nikala Scholtz, who only has a doubles ranking of 1,435.
Canada will be led by Milos Raonic, the world 15, while Daniel Nestor is the world number three doubles player.
