Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and reigning UFC Lightweight Champion, Conor McGregor announced that they would fight on 26 August at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Mayweather comes out of retirement since 2015 after defeating Andre Berto in his 49th bout. As he heads towards his 50th fight, he seeks to reign undefeated. He has equalled Rocky Marciano, who equally has 49 victories and no defeats. The only difference is that Mayweather will be going for the record this time round.
Mayweather is known as one of the most successful boxers in history and as a UFC Champion, McGregor's feats are not to be overlooked. This will be one of the richest fights in boxing history and Mayweather and McGregor are expected to earn an estimate of $100 million dollars each.
McGregor has never fought professionally and as BBC Sport reports, has previously challenged Mayweather to a fight under Mix Martial Arts rules.
BBC Sports adds that McGregor’s boxing licence was granted in December, which allows him to box in the US State.
UFC President Dana White mentioned that “The reason Conor McGregor's as big as he is, is [because] he'll fight anybody, anywhere, any time. He will go after Floyd Mayweather and he will try to knock him out.”
Looking at the logistics, White adds, “Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old, he's always had problems with southpaws”
“Conor McGregor is 28 and he is a southpaw. Whenever Conor hits people, they fall. He is 100% positive that he wins this fight, and I stopped doubting him a long time ago.”
But who will reign victorious?
The “pay-per-view” buys are expected to shoot through the roof as the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight stood at 4.6 million.
Both fighters took to social media to announce the match. Mayweather said "IT'S OFFICIAL!!!" with pictures of both fighters and the location.
Likewise, McGregor sent out a tweet stating "THE FIGHT IS ON."
