After a 15-month doping ban, the former world number one Maria Sharapova made an incredible return to the Grand Slam competition on Monday.
She outlasted the Romanian second seed Simona Halep 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at the US Open.
30-year-old Sharapova was hit by a 15-month suspension after failing a drugs test at the 2016 Australian Open. The ban ended in April but she missed the French Open and Wimbledon tournament.
"I just thought this was another day, another opportunity, another match but this was so much more.
"You sometimes wonder why you put in all the work and this is exactly why,” said the five-time major winner.
