How does this unify us?! It's like naming the streets we live on after men that bombed our families - they are deliberately stirring discontent within the white population. Clearly AmaBokoBoko isn't black enough for them, it's a pity the \"All Blacks\" is taken!
Wake up and realise that you are doing the exact opposite of unifying the country, you are driving a stake in the gap between us - FYI this is a democracy, voting you into power does not make you gods! This is still the will of the people, and even our black sportsmen and fans recognise the Springbok as a symbol of sporting excellence and something to be proud of. Try taking the Wallaby away from the Aussies or the Kiwi away from the All Blacks and see what sort of response you get! The springbok is South Africas national animal by the way, not the Nat Party logo or the swastika!
Try taking Bafana Bafana away from our all-black soccer squad and see how they respond!

Changing the emblem is just something the government wants to do so they can be seen to be doing something to change the recent trend...unfortunately, it's not going to make us top the medal list at the next olympics. \"The ANC would like to state categorically that it would not like to see any replacement or change of the Springbok emblem until sufficient debate and consultation of all stakeholders, including rugby supporters, has taken place,\" said African National Congress spokesperson Jessie Duarte.

\"We would also like to encourage our world-acclaimed sportsmen to continue winning more world cups for South Africa and not be detracted by debates on the future of the Springbok emblem.\"

She was responding to discussions at the National Sports Indaba in Durban where sports portfolio committee chairman Butana Komphela told delegates on Thursday that the Springbok emblem divided the country.

\"Minister, I want you to observe the arrogance of white people on the Springbok emblem,\" he said.

Komphela said that there could be \"no negotiation\" on replacing the Springbok emblem. "); document.write("

Does he not follow Bafana Bafana because there are no white South Africans in it ? Then I am afraid he is racist. I am an Indian and I support the Bokke, Bafana Bafana, The Proteas – even Ernie Els. Only cricket has an Indian in it. Whether a person of your ethnic group is represented is immaterial – you should support the national team. That is just plain wrong.

Remarks like these by the Sports Portfolio Committee chairperson Butana Komphela leads people to question certain actions/remarks and ultimately them being branded racist. The biggest racist here is Butana Komphela. Being a person in a public position, viewing such racist remarks, can only be detrimental to the greater good of South Africa. A country in a post apartheid era. As for Butana’s remarks – personally I think that it is remarks like this that are extremely racist. How can we take away such a big part of our history? We are the world champions and are known worldwide by that name. Let it be Butane – there is no way that it should be changed. Personally I think the springbok emblem should be our nation’s logo and should be included in all sports – i.e. soccer, cricket, etc. It should unite us all and I believe this will instil some pride in the ‘other’ sports.

Butana surely there is something else you can do. Here’s something :
I don’t agree with race quotas. If you are good enough – you should play for your country. If a person is in a team to represent race quotas – how will that person feel and what does that do for team moral ?
I think it is the Sports Ministry that should be allocating cash to find the next Ntini, Habana or McCarthy rather than letting the likes of Kevin Pieterson mouthing off against the country of his birth.

DA SPOKESPERSON ON SPORT
If Springbok emblem was good for Nelson Mandela, then it is good for South Africa
Release, immediate: Friday, 10 October 2008
The Democratic Alliance (DA) urges the ANC government to focus on developing sports infrastructure in South Africa to produce the best sportsmen and women who can improve the country’s performance in international sports competitions. In this spirit, we will send a copy of our recently-launched sports policy, “The Pursuit of Excellence’, to Luthuli House to assist the ANC in resolving the problems facing sport in the country.
There is no need to s#### the Springbok emblem. Everybody in the country, including those who are not necessarily rugby fans, identifies with this emblem. Every emerging rugby player aspires to be part of the Springboks’ legacy. The emblem is a symbol of excellence, pride and passion. It has been with us through two rugby World Cup victories, and it epitomizes the pursuit of excellence not only in rugby but sport in the country.
The ANC government’s campaign to s#### the Springbok emblem is part of an orchestrated ploy to divide South Africa unnecessarily, and to deflect attention from the many failures of its sports policies. Former president, Nelson Mandela, endorsed the emblem because he acknowledged its significance and value. If the emblem was good for Mandela, then it is good for the rest of South Africa.
The claim by the chairperson of the portfolio committee on sport, Butana Khompela, that the emblem ‘divides’ the nation is unfounded. Each time the Springboks play, South Africans from all walks of life rally behind the team. The pride and euphoria that follow our rugby team are a testament to the fact that the Springbok emblem is appreciated across racial, political and ethnic lines.
Mr. Komphela should spend more time concentrating on his oversight responsibilities than on his witch-hunt against the Springboks. What South Africa needs is to develop young talent in sport to produce the best sports stars, who will bring the country into league with the best sporting nations in the world.

The chairperson of the portfolio committee on sports, Butana Komphela, is abusing the committee in order to drive his vendetta against the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and to further his racially-driven agenda. In light of this, the Democratic Alliance (DA), along with a number of other parties believes that it is Komphela who must account for his conduct, not SASCOC. Until that happens, we will also consider not taking part in the future activities of the committee.

It is clear that the portfolio committee is engaged in a witch-hunt against SASCOC and its head Moss Mashishi. This is evidenced by the fact that ANC members of the portfolio committee reiterated Komphela’s outrageous remark that SASCOC ‘is full of whites and Indians’ during yesterday’s meeting, which the sports representative body was supposed to attend.

The key issue in the whole SASCOC debacle is not the sports body’s alleged disregard for Parliament, but Komphela’s unacceptable conduct. Mr. Komphela has no respect for sports leaders in the country and opposition members of the portfolio committee, yet he expects to be treated with respect.

SASCOC’s decision to boycott the portfolio committee due to Butana Komphela’s behaviour is a reflection of the sports community’s dissatisfaction with his conduct. Throughout his tenure as chairperson he has been more concerned with launching cynical racist attacks on sports leaders than ensuring that the committee conducts serious oversight work.

I have personally written to the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, on two occasions to complain about Mr. Komphela’s behaviour but she failed to respond to either letter.

The DA will not be party to a witch-hunt against SASCOC or Moss Mashishi. We reiterate our call for the Speaker of Parliament to investigate Butana Komphela’s unacceptable conduct.. "); document.write("

Is this the first 'BIG PUSH', to force whites away from the game, so that blacks can get in without 'quotas' being the stigma? Is there a 'white uproar' at the make-up of the national soccer side (and why not?) Me thinks , perhaps the motive behind the 'culling of the springbok' have nothing at all to do with unity, but more of hoping that it stops the mainstay supporters of rugby (mainly white Afrikaner males) from identifying with a game that is a religion to them.
