The Lions' recruitment drive picked up speed on Monday with the news that former Springbok Sevens captain and Emerging Bok Jonathan Mokuena will join the team from 1 November, ahead of the 2010 Super 14.

Mokuena, who has captained Griquas to within a point of a place in the Currie Cup play-offs this year, has also played for the Leopards, Cheetahs and Western Province.

The signing of Mokuena follows in the wake of Springbok Tonderai Chavhanga, who signed with the Lions last month, and is a clear indication that the Johannesburg-based franchise is slowly filling the gaps left in the wake of a mass exodus of senior players earlier this year.

The Golden Lions Rugby Union said in a statement they are "thrilled" to have the former SA Sevens Captain and member of the Emerging Boks, who also played for the Royal XV against the British & Irish Lions earlier this year.

"Mokuena has a definite energy, and we cannot wait for him to join our squad," GLRU CEO Manie Reyneke said.

"There is little doubt that this leader will bring new dynamics to the team and be an inspiration to his teammates," Reyneke added.
