Cheeky Watson, father of controversial Springbok flank Luke Watson, said that although his son might not play for the Springboks again, he may yet play for the "South African national team" in the future.
Watson Snr's comments from Port Elizabeth on Monday clearly made inference to the possibility that the Springbok emblem might well disappear.
Speaking from New Brighton, Watson Sr introduced his "election team", in light of his presidency campaign for the Eastern Province Rugby Union, which will be announced on November 29.
Cheeky and his proposed management team are confident that he will defeat Pat de Silva, and other candidates in the running for the election of the new EPRU president.
"Luke showed great leadership by standing back for the upcoming [Springbok] tour," Cheeky said on etv, referring to Luke's decision last week to step down from the selection stakes for South Africa's November tour.
Watson Snr also confirmed
that Luke would not be going abroad to play rugby, but rather that he will "be back to play Super 14 rugby next year."
"If he performs as well as he can, he can play for South Africa again," he added.
Meanwhile, Luke Watson is due to face a SA Rugby disciplinary hearing in response to reported remarks he had made over the Springbok Jersey, and issues relating to his "forced" inclusion in the Springbok squad in 2007.
