SA Rugby has confirmed that the Union's deputy president, Mark Alexander will lead the new Super Rugby franchise, with the Eastern Province Rugby Union as the host union.
Alexander will head up the interim steering committee established to guide the process of setting up the new franchise, the Southern Kings.
There has been some confusion about the leadership of the bid to establish a Super Rugby franchise in the Eastern Cape.
The reports suggested that controversial Eastern Province boss Cheeky Watson had been replaced by the Director of Sport in the Eastern Cape, Bafundi Makubalo as the chairperson of the 'task team' that will establish the franchise.
Watson dismissed reports that he has been 'axed' but Saru president Oregan Hoskins confirmed that Makubalo will indeed head up the task team along with Alexander.
"The Eastern Cape and Saru are working closely with local government on the project and Director of Sport in the
Eastern Cape, Bafundi Makubalo has been appointed to oversee the co-ordination of local government’s support," Hoskins said in a statement.
The Southern Kings will be formally launched when the franchise, in the guise of a Coastal XV, play against the British and Irish Lions touring team on June 16.
