The assault of a Gauteng rugby team's captain during a match in August was not racially motivated, the Golden Lions Rugby Union said on Thursday.

"In terms of them GLRU's regulations, an anti-racism committee was convened as a result of the allegations made by the Eldoronians... the committee came to the conclusion that racism played no part in the incidents of the day," spokeswoman Krystle Geach said in a statement.

The findings followed a complaint laid by the Eldoronians after its captain JP Luyt was punched in the mouth by a Wanderers Rugby Club player during a game on August 1.

Geach said Eldoronian team members failed to testify during hearings on the matter, "claiming that the matter had been prejudiced.

"In the absence of any testimony to the contrary, the committee came to the conclusion that racism played no part in the incidents of the day."

Only members of the Wanderers team testified.

"None of them construed anything amounting to racial incitement."

The Star quoted Eldoronians team manager Rynald Isaacs at the time saying that racial slurs were hurled at the players by the Wanderers team.

The referee had to stop the match. Luyt was admitted to hospital with a missing tooth, about 13 stitches and a severe concussion. The police were called and, according to The Star, the Eldoronians were escorted off the field.

"They like to call us 'bushmen' and 'hotnots' and the K-word. It's not acceptable, not in this day and age," Luyt told the paper.

Beeld newspaper, quoting Wanderers head coach Bokkie Keulder, said players from the other team brandished knives and allegedly threatened to kill his players.

"It was quite a rough match, full of shoving and pushing and also punches. Eldo players continually swore at and shoved one of our forwards. By the second half it had become so bad that the referee decided to stop the game."

After the game was stopped, he alleged the Eldoronians blocked the doors to the changerooms and, armed with knives, threatened to kill the Wanderers players.
