Free State flyer Fabian Juries is coy on his Bok prospects but his electrifying display in the Currie Cup over the past few weeks may have placed him in contention for the Green and Gold.
The 30-year-old is regarded as a Sevens veteran having represented South Africa in the abbreviated format of the game for an extended period over the past decade and he is second on the all-time leading IRB Sevens try-scorers' list having scored 173 tries.
Juries' scintillating running skills has been an exciting feature as the Cheetahs continue their surge toward the Currie Cup playoffs. He highlighted this ability with one of the finest solo efforts of the season when he jinked his way past nine would-be Bulls defenders in a moment of brilliance which set Loftus Versfeld alight last Saturday.
A week earlier he mesmerised the Sharks in another man of the match display from fullback and he was a constant threat for the Pretoria outfit in the No.11 jumper.
"In Sevens defence closes in from the outside and on Saturday it was a similar case when I had to step inside to score that try," Juries told iafrica.com during the build-up to this weekend's clash against the struggling Leopards.
"In Sevens I had to do that inside stepping a lot and is why it was easy for me to do it [against the Bulls]. There were just a lot more guys in the way this time!" he quipped.
Juries' heroics wasn't enough to clinch the win for the Free Staters as they were downed 27-30 but his recent performances may have earned him a few ticks on the Bok contenders list for the year-end tour.
At 1.73 meters tall and weighing a slight 76kg Juries doesn't exactly fit the recent mould of Bok wings and it would be interesting to see how he fits into the current Bok gameplan with incumbent wings, Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen applying a lot of pressure under the high ball.
While the Grahamstown-born speedster admits his physique could count against him, he pointed out a few other tricks in his arsenal.
"At this stage I'm just taking one game at a time so I'm not going to get ahead of myself and think about it [Bok selection] too much ," Juries said.
"[But] Every team has different strategy. The Cheetahs also play a kicking game and Hennie [Daniller] and Lionel [Mapoe] are both good in the air so I think we compliment each other well.
"My weight might count against me [to play for the Boks] but on the other hand I have attributes that count in my favour as well," he explained.
Free State's defeat meant that they dropped to sixth position on the log with 30 points but they face a relatively easy run-in to the playoff with games against the Leopards and Boland Cavaliers coming up over the next fortnight. Therefore, Juries remains upbeat about the team's chances to stay in the playoff bubble as the hunt for playoff spots intensifies.
"We are happy with where we are at the moment. Griquas need to pick up three points from their last two games and that's against the Bulls and Sharks. So hopefully they won't get any points from those games. The Lions also have two tough games against the Sharks and WP," he said.
While the Cheetahs' road to the playoff looks less daunting Juries is wary of the Leopards, who put on a spirited performance against the Sharks last weekend.
"The Leopards did well against the Sharks and they will come out to play. We can't just expect to pitch up and think the game is already won. "
