Western Province skipper Luke Watson says the Golden Lions are one of the most underrated sides in the Currie Cup and his team is under no illusions about the task at hand in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Victory plus a bonus point for Province will almost certainly guarantee them the top position, even if the Sharks bag five points from their clash against Griquas in Kimberley. If Province beat the Lions without collecting a bonus points and the Sharks come away with five points, the Durban outfit will finish as logleaders.

Fortunately for Province by the time the game kicks off in Johannesburg they will know exactly what is required to take the top spot as all the other fixtures would have been completed by then.

However, Watson stressed that they won't alter their approach even if the requirements change before kick-off on Saturday.

"We would like to carry the winning momentum forward," Watson told this website during the build-up to Saturday's clash.

"Whether we do need to win or don't need to win, we still want to win and that is our focus and primary goal. If we score four tries then that will be a bonus."

Watson highlighted the Lions' impressive display against the Sharks last weekend and he is expecting them to come all out in a bid to finish their season on a high in front of their home crowd.

"The Lions are a very underrated side and they had some raw deals this season. The bounce of the ball has gone against them in a few games and sometimes teams underestimate them.

"They play with a lot of intensity and enthusiasm. They put up a gutsy performance last week and they never give up.

"I'm sure they will rock up in a big way on Saturday and they will certainly put us to task."

Watson is also wary of the threat the Jo' burg side poses at breakdown time, with Cobus Grobbelaar, Derrick Minnie and centre Doppies la Grange forming a formidable breakdown tag-team.

"The breakdown is one of the areas they will fiercely contest. They have a few players that are very good on the ground. They counter ruck, load the ruck and contest very fiercely."

The Bath-bound Watson will play his last few games for the Cape side over the next few weeks in what has been an impressive season from the No.8. He is the leading try-scorer in the Currie Cup competition with 11 scores.

Province coach Allister Coetzee heaped praise on his captain earlier this week after Watson produced yet another outstanding performance against Boland.

"Luke's been incredible this season... not only his personal play and his leadership but also the way he is making this team play as a team.

"What more can a coach ask for then that kind of leadership? I come a long way with Luke. I was the first guy to give Luke a proper run to start his provincial career at Eastern Province.

"Since Luke started to captain the side when Jean [de Villiers] and Schalla [Schalk Burger] were injured for the last four Super 14 games he did exceptionally well. Now we just want to make sure we send him off properly."
