With the carrot of a Test spot dangling in front of several of the Dirt Tracker Springboks, assistant coach Dick Muir expects South Africa to get their tour off to a rousing start against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road on Friday.

Speaking to iafrica.com in a telephonic interview, after the captain's run in Leicester on Thursday, Muir said the game is a "huge" opportunity for the players.

"A lot of the players haven't had starting berths in the Bok jersey, they are getting that opportunity now and it is a good hit-out for them," Muir said about a game that kicks off a five-match tour that will also see the Boks play Tests against France, Italy and Ireland, along with a second midweek outing against Saracens.

"It is a good challenge, because this is an opportunity for them to play themselves into a Test spot."

Muir admitted that winning the game is important, because this will set the tone for the rest of the tour.

"In South Africa we get judged on results and we are a very proud nation, so when anybody puts on the Springbok jersey we represent the entire nation and winning is very important for us," the Bok backline coach, who is in charge of the Dirt Trackers, told iafrica.com.

"However, for me it is more about everybody just going out there and doing their best and the result should look after itself."

Muir said that because the team they will face on Friday is a lot different to the Tigers' regular starting XV, they haven't been able to do too much analysing of the individuals.

"We've been able to get some footage on the opponents and some of the games they've had," he said, adding: "With [All Black] Aaron Mauger at flyhalf they obviously have a specific plan on how they want to play.

"But we can't be too analytical on the opponents, we have to worry more about what we are going to do."

Muir said he was happy that despite the short turnaround, he had just a few practice runs since the team gathered at the weekend, they will be able to gel into a solid unit.

"They are all good players in their own right, otherwise they wouldn't be here, so we are quite confident that we've had enough time and the proof will be in what they produce on the field," Muir said.

And while the conditions have been anything but kind to the visitors, with the prospect of precipitation and cold conditions looming large, Muir feels his team will need to "flexible" in their approach.

"If it is not great weather we have to adapt our game accordingly," he said, adding that they have the kind of players who are flexible enough.

"I must say we have a group that are nicely switched on, despite the short preparation timer we've had.

"The guys have really come together extremely well."

The Bok backline coach also spoke of the "enthusiasm and excitement" in a squad that is a "nice blend between youth and experience".

"It all bodes well," Muir added.
