The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) said on Wednesday it would lobby to host the first ever play-off between the winners of the Six Nations and Tri-Nations championships.
World rugby chiefs will discuss launching a "best against the best" clash between the top international teams when they meet in Hong Kong on Sunday, and Hong Kong's rugby authorities believe they are well-placed to host such an event.
The territory, already home to the annual Sevens tournament, is also poised to land its first top-tier rugby international, a Test match between New Zealand and Australia, with an announcement expected next week.
"Hong Kong is a great location for international sports events and attracting more of them is part of the union's strategic plan," said HKRFU executive director Allan Payne.
He said the proposed global championship was "very fortuitous as we are seeking to host other events," and confirmed the union would meet international rugby chiefs at the weekend to discuss the plan.
"I know we'll be meeting them around that time and I wouldn't be surprised if the subject came up," he said.
Deputy chairman Bill Beaumont said earlier this month the International Rugby Board (IRB) was looking to organise "a competition which pits the best against the best."
The Hong Kong Wallabies-versus-All Blacks clash is expected to take place in Hong Kong in October or November.
Payne said there were "still a few things that need to be sorted out" but added, "I'd like to think there will be an announcement next week."
