Wallabies captain David Pocock will be lost to the Wallabies for up to three months after undergoing knee surgery on Tuesday.

Pocock damaged the articular cartilage in his right knee during last weekend's opening 27-19 loss to New Zealand in Sydney and will miss the remainder of the Rugby Championship.

The Australian Rugby Union said in a statement that Pocock's position on November's Australian tour of Europe is also in doubt.

Australia will announce its team for Saturday's match against New Zealand in Auckland on Thursday. Scrumhalf Will Genia is expected to replace Pocock as captain.

Pocock took over the Australia captaincy from James Horwill, who is sidelined for the remainder of the season and joins an injury list that includes key backs James O'Connor and Pat McCabe.
