Former Maritzburg United head coach Gordon Igesund, whose resignation was announced by the club today, insists he left for personal reasons and not the 4-0 hammering his club suffered at the hands of Santos.
Halfway into the season, the club was pushed to 12th position after the big loss to the People's Team, but Igesund tells Football365.co.za the decision was his and had nothing to do with the heavy loss.
"The club management was very surprised too, so it had nothing to do with the results," Igesund said.
"I think they have a good enough team to make it to the top eight by the end of the season or even a top five."
But when asked why he resigned despite the progress being made at the club, he retorted: "It was for personal reasons as the club stated in its statement released to the media, that's it."
Maritzburg's record under Igesund this season reads; three wins, seven draws and five losses.
Furthermore, rumour has it that the four-time PSL champion coach is set to take over as Bafana Bafana's third assistant but Igesund didn't say much to defuse the speculation.
"No comment on that," he said.
