Second-placed SuperSport United had cut the gap to just one point last night following their 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs, but the 'Urban Warriors' confirmed their credentials as championship contenders with this victory.

Defender Dikulu Bageta's early goal settled a hard-fought encounter between two sides who are having markedly different fortunes in South Africa's top-flight league.

Bageta struck direct from a 20-yard free-kick in the 10th minute after a hand ball by Cosmos' Bonginkosi Macala.

The rest of the match was evenly contested and goalkeepers Avril Phali, as well as Ajax veteran Hans Vonk, both had some anxious moments as their respective opponents threatened to add to the scoreline.

Cosmos' relegation fears will be heightened after this result as they are now in 15th position, with just 15 points to show from 19 games.

The teams:

Cosmos: Phali, Plaatjies, Nahayo, Tshilo, Mhlathe (Moloto 77), Gould, B Sono, Mabalane, Macala, Nhleko, Massa (Letsholonyane 23).

Ajax: Vonk, Moon, Ferreira, Bageta, Evans, Enoh, Siwahla (Cale 46), Shumana (Shabalala 63), Mwafulirwa, Paulse (Vilakazi 86).
