Bafana Bafana team manager Sipho Nkumane has reacted angrily to comments made by former Bafana skipper Lucas Radebe that South Africa need controversial striker Benni McCarthy.

Radebe feels that McCarthy is a cure for the national team's shortcomings up front.

"He is lost and backward. Radebe was unjustified in his attack of the national team and the insistence on the recall of McCarthy," Nkumane told the Sunday World.

He added: "If we need Benni as urgently as suggested by Radebe, then we might just as well recall former stars like Doctor Khumalo, Mark Fish and a host of others.

"He must not seek cheap public attention at the expense of Bafana. His passion is not in the game but on commercial interests.

"Safa has 52 regions that need to be developed. If he shows interest in that direction then we will be convinced that he has the interest of soccer at heart. If he has any issues with the team, he is free to contact coach Joel Santana, who will gladly give him a hearing."

Nkumane said South Africa cannot rely on McCarthy forever, saying the country needs to produce more McCarthy's.

"McCarthy was a rising star in the 90s, how can we still talk about him. Until when are we going to rely on him? We need to produce more McCarthys," continued Nkumane.

Meanwhile, Radebe’s manager Glyn Binkin said Nkumane's attack on Radebe is unjustified.

"Radebe is an icon with proven credibility. I was there when he made those comments and there was no malice intended.

"He is entitled to his opinion. If Nkumane is questioning Radebe's credibility, then he must look at himself. We could have beaten Iraq," commented Binkin.
