BidVest Wits moved to joint second position on the log with this impressive 3-1 win over Jomo Cosmos in this Absa Premiership encounter that was played at BIDVest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Wits, who have accumulated 17 points from nine matches, go into the coming FIFA international break trailing current log leaders Orlando Pirates by two points and they will resume their PSL action away to Golden Arrows with their spirits sky high.
This victory was secured from Fabricio Rodrigues' penalty in the first half and two more by Calvin Kadi and Marawaan Bantam late in the second half to finish off Jomo Cosmos.
The other notable factor about the Students after this game is that their striker Kadi is now leading the PSL goal scoring charts with eight goals.
Speaking after the match, Kadi said he was happy with his performance so far in the league and to be on top of the goal scoring charts on the log.
"It feels good but there are other strikers who are breathing down my neck so I have to work more hard. As a team I think we have what it take to go all the way and achieve something special at the end of the season," he said.
For Jomo Sono and his men, they face an uphill battle to move themselves from the basement of the log where they have only accumulated six points from eight matches.
Wits made their intentions of winning this match clear as early as the third minute when on-form Kadi released Patrick Phungwayo with a defence-splitting pass but the impressive left-back who made a telling run into the area could not beat Cosmos goalkeeper Avril Phali.
A minute later, Wits were on the attack again and this time midfielder Mark Haskins put Kadi through but he could not add to his impressive seven goals in the league as he blasted his shot straight at Phali who got was working hard so early in the game.
Wits' persistent attacks were rewarded with a goal in the 25th minute when referee Matthew Dyer pointed to the spot after Cosmos midfielder Thabiso Hlalele brought down Haskins in the box and the Brazilian Rodrigues had the nerves of steel to sent Phali the wrong way.
The goal injected some live into Cosmos as they initiated a good move into the Wits half that resulted in Bamuza Sono's effort inside the box being saved by experienced Wits goalkeeper Francis Chansa. Sono got another glorious opportunity a few minutes later but chose to side foot his effort wide of the target.
Just after the half hour mark, Wits? inspirational captain Tefu Mashamaite came close increasing their lead when his point blank header deflected from a Cosmos player and rolled past the upright with desperate Phali beaten.
On the stroke of half time, Kadi evaded the Cosmos defence on the blind side but his effort was denied by Phali who was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the opening half.
Wits created the most notable chance of the second half in the 69th minute when impressive and stylish midfielder Sifiso Myeni released substitute Marawaan Bantam with a good pass but his stylish finish inside the box could only managed the upright.
Wits finally increased their lead in the 78th minute through Kadi before Cosmos pulled one back from the boot of Koena Mathopa but the Students wrapped this game with Bantam's delightful free-kick three minutes from time to bury Cosmos.
