Maritzburg United were held to a 1-1 draw by last-placed Jomo Cosmos in a Premier Soccer League game at Woodburn Stadium on Wednesday night.

Cosmos took the lead in the 17th minute when Koena Mathopa was allowed to run between two defenders onto Ayo Oluwafemi's crossfield pass from the left and finish past goalkeeper Tashrique Goldman.

United struggled to get their passing game together but did manage to manufacture a chance in the 37th minute when Fadlu Davids slipped after being put through on goal but recovered to tee up Bekha Phakathi, whose shot was pushed over the bar by goalkeeper Avril Phali.

The home team took the lead a minute later when the resultant corner was poorly cleared and headed back into the area by Noah Chivuta, and, after a game of pinball, Davids again teed up, this time for Brice Aka to blast in his first goal of the season.

While United settled into a better passing rhythm in the second half both sides had their chances, with home 'keeper Tashrique Goldman pulling off point-blank saves in the 80th minute from Koena Mathopa and Elhadji Samb.

For United Davids hit a free header straight at keeper Avril Phali and Rudolf Bester missed a sitter with two minutes to go when he headed over at the far post form Felix Obada's corner.
