Cosmos seek redemption
Mon, 23 Nov 2009 12:00
Jomo Cosmos will be desperate to put home advantage to good use and claim a much-needed victory when they host Golden Arrows for an Absa Premiership match at the Rand Stadium on Tuesday evening (kick-off 7.30pm).
Cosmos are in real danger of becoming marooned at the bottom of the log standings. The Johannesburg team has suffered four successive defeats and last tasted victory (their only one of the season) in late August ? that's 13 matches without a win.
'Ezenkosi's latest setback came on the weekend when they were defeated 2-0 by Platinum Stars in Rustenburg. The result left Cosmos with just nine points from 16 matches and the 16th-placed club are four points behind second-from-bottom MP Black Aces.
"All we need is a positive mind and a bit of luck. The team has been playing well although we have been hampered by injuries and suspensions sometimes," cosmos coach Jomo Sono told the club's official website.
He added: "It has obviously not also been easy to get the team to gel with the youngsters being thrown into the deep end because of the reasons mentioned earlier.
"The new guys are also struggling to settle well while for others, like Sekou Camara it was quite quick to acclimatise."
Arrows have failed to convert the great cup form, that saw them win the top eight, to the Absa Premiership. The coastal side has won just three of their 16 matches thus far and lies in 11th place on the table with 19 points.
'Abafana Bes'thende' suffered a 3-1 reverse at the hands of Moroka Swallows at the weekend, and Cosmos will certainly be keen to inflict a second straight defeat.
However, Arrows have a good head-to-head record against Cosmos, having won nine matches to two in the clubs' 17 league encounters since 2000/01.
Furthermore, 'Abafana Bes'thende' defeated 'Ezenkosi' 2-0 earlier this season thanks to a brace from defender-cum-midfielder Musa Bilankulu, so they will have a slight psychological advantage.
