Sundowns, the Castle Premiership champions for the second season in succession, were everyone's favourites to beat Ajax and win the 2006/07 Absa Cup, despite the youngsters from Cape Town having beaten them on three previous occasions this season.
Even Black Leopards coach Boebie Solomons, himself a Capetonian, did not back Ajax against the all-conquering 'Downs line-up.
But the brave 'Urban Warriors' proved to be more than three-hit wonders, with a first-half goal from Man of the Match Bryce 'Scooter' Moon putting them ahead, before Franklyn Cale's second-half lob put the icing on top for the Cape-based side, who proudly lifted the coveted 'Cup of Dreams' trophy.
Speaking to ajaxct.com, a proud Mekuto said: "If there was a team that deserved the win, it had to be Ajax. We played great football all season long, although we were unlucky on certain occasions. Eventually, something had to give... and it did."
Mekuto also applauded the work done by charismatic Ajax head coach Muhsin Ertugral, who moulded a bunch of untried youngsters in a formidable unit. As a bonus, and on top of their Absa Cup success, some players were also rewarded with national selection.
"It was a combination of many things as he [Ertugral], together with assistant coach Ian Gorowa, goalkeeping coach Andre Bronkhorst and team captain Hans Vonk, plotted our success," continued Mekuto.
"The vision of (CEO) John Comitis is beginning to take shape, as we have now carried the Western Cape flag to success.
"It is has been a joy to see young individuals turn into a collective football force and bring joy to the Western Cape.
"There are better seasons to come. For now we must enjoy the success as it is well deserved!"
