Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy silenced his critics by helping South Africa to a 2-2 draw with the 38th-ranked Australia on Tuesday night. But, asks iafrica.com's Khaya Ndubane, is he back for good?

McCarthy, who has been in the media for all the wrong reasons of late, set-up both goals in Bafana's deserved draw with the Socceroos.

First, his cheeky back heel sent Siyabonga Nkosi through on goals before coolly slotting the ball home, then his trickery allowed Bryce Moon some space to cross the ball to 'super-sub' Teko Modise who scored with a powerful shot.

On the downside, however, was McCarthy's failure to convert chances while in good goal-scoring positions.

He really looked out of sorts in front of goals. His shots were often blocked or way off the target, but flashes of the 'old' Benni were still there for all to see — at times.

Another player who grabbed his recall to Bafana squad with both hands was Nkosi, who seems to have improved since his high-profile move from Kaizer Chiefs to Arminia Bielefeld.

Nkosi slotted well in his new position as a supporting striker-cum-midfielder and his partnership with McCarthy gave the Australian defence some headaches. If Bafana Bafana's play against the Socceroos is anything to go by, then Nigeria could be in for a surprise or two when the two teams meet in a crucial African Cup of Nations qualifier on 6 September.

One thing is for sure though is that South Africa needs McCarthy if they are to bring down the Super Eagles of Nigeria, but it all depends on Benni making himself available for this crucial match.

And with rumuors linking him with a move to Sunderland, one cannot help but wonder whether McCarthy will not ask coach Joel Santana to give him time to settle at his new club.

One swallow does not make a summer; just as one friendly match in London does not mean Benni is back for good in Bafana colours.

Benni, your country needs you on the field — as you showed on Tuesday night, but they also need a commitment beyond just one match... They need you on board through thick and thin in the build-up to 2010.
