Defending champions SuperSport United are in pole position to retain their Absa Premiership title, but any one of the five teams below them are still in the title race.

SuperSport, with six matches to play, are on 46 points but sixth placed BidVest Wits, who with Ajax Cape Town are on 34 points and due to the lack of consistency from all the teams in the league, no side can be ruled out.

United get a break from league action when they travel to the Ugandan capital Kampala this weekend to play Kampala City Council in their African Champions League second round, first leg tie.

Second placed Orlando Pirates who have 40 points and a match in hand are hitting a rich vein of form and scored a massive psychological advantage over SuperSport when they knocked United out of the Nedbank Cup at the weekend winning 2-0 at Ellis Park.

'Bucs' last Wednesday produced one of the best performances of the season when reduced to 10-men in the 60 minute, defeated third placed Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 at their "House of Pain."

Chiefs are back in contention after beating Golden Arrows 1-0 in the league and then boosting morale with a tough 1-0 win after extra time over Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup last weekend.

Ajax, who play Zimbabwe's Monomotapa at the Athlone Stadium in their Champions League second round, first leg encounter at the weekend, have 34 points — the same as Wits.

Wits are in a stronger position than most punters realise as they have two matches in hand. But as their coach Roger de Sa says "games in hand are just thatand not necessarily mean points in the bag.

SuperSport still have to play Wits, Pirates and Sundowns and some coaches and fans are hoping United's African campaign could derail the defence of their title.

However, United coach Gavin Hunt said that playing in Africa was a huge boost for his players. "Competing in Africa gives players the chance of meeting teams from other countries with different styles and it also affords me the chance to give some players who have been sitting on the bench, the chance to get a run out."

But of the six title hopefuls Bucs and Downs have merged as the strongest challengers.
