Moroka Swallows cast aside poor league form to defeat Wits University 3-1 Wednesday and reach the second round of the Nedbank Cup.

After three consecutive league defeats that banished them from the title race, the 'Birds' must have feared the worst when allowing 10-man Wits to equalise in the final minute of regular time.

But the dismissal of midfielder Sandile Sibande for a second caution five minutes from full-time eventually took its toll at sparsely populated Olympia Park in the northern mining town Rustenburg.

Brazilian Davi Rancon headed Swallows in front for the second time 20 minutes into extra time when the 'Students' did not clear a corner and substitute Sandile Ndlovu delivered the killer blow near the end.

National squad midfielder Lefa Tsutsulupa gave Swallows a 74th-minute lead and Tebogo Langerman levelled with a superb last-gasp strike, beating Tyron Damons from an acute angle.

An 87th-minute goal from Romano Scott gave Cape Town-based Premiership outfit Santos a 2-1 home win over amateurs Milano United while Peace Lovers edged Real Madrid 1-0 in a lower-division clash in Polokwane.

The second round draw will be made Thursday in Johannesburg with glamour clubs Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates among 16 survivors chasing the prize.
