Big-spending Absa Premiership side Mamelodi Sundowns have appointed former Bulgaria coach Hristo Stoichkov as the club's head coach for the upcoming season.
"We are excited to welcome Hristo Stoichkov to Sundowns. We were looking for a coach who will ensure that the Sundowns style of shoe shine and piano, and our Brazilian style of play is maintained," Sundowns Chief Scout Trott Moloto told the club's official website.
He added: "The technical committee looked at numerous candidates and unanimously agreed that Hristo Stoichkov is the man to help us realise our dream of becoming one of the best teams on the African continent."
Stoichkov played for FC Barcelona from 1990 to 1995 and was part of the successful Barcelona dream team which was coached by Johan Cruyff.
During the 1995/96 season he played for FC Parma in Italy. He returned to Spain to play for FC Barcelona from 1996 to 1998.
He was head coach of the Barcelona youth team
from 2003 to 2004. Stoichkov also coached the Bulgarian national team from 2004 to 2007. He then coached FC Real Club Celta de Vigo.
