Free State Stars goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was named the club's 2008/09 Player of the Year at an award ceremony, which was held at the Bethlehem City Hall on Thursday night.

The players efforts ensured his bank account was enriched to the tune of R100 000.

Left-back Ruben Cloete was nominated as the Players' Player of the Year, and because of his team-mates vote he is R40 000 richer. Striker Sthembiso Ngcobo won R65 000 for his 10 goals.

"I am very surprised, very happy and more motivated now," said Mweene with a broad smile.

"I pushed myself this past season and will certainly do it again next season. I cannot describe how I feel right now but as you can see I am very very happy. We had a good season and all the players can be proud of what they have done for this team.

"We came from the bottom half of the table to finish in fourth place and next season we will improve on this.

The Malawian international is contracted to the club until 2011 and dispelled any notions of moving to another Premier Soccer League outfit.

Cloete too was surprised at his award and was humbled by the recognition the players showed him.

"It shows they have confidence in me and that they respect me. Well we all respect each other but this (award) is very surprising and I am very happy," the former Santos winger said.

Ngcobo credited his team-mates and coaches for the confidence and motivation they gave him throughout the season.

"I enjoyed my game this season and I have to thank the coaches and my team-mates for their contribution. They really made my job pleasurable and easy," the former Durban Stars and AmaZulu hitman said.

Tebello Mofokeng and Thamane Motaung shared the award for Rookie of the season. Siya Mdluli won the award for the club's Most Disciplined Player and defender James Matola the Most Consistent Player of the Year.

Second choice goalie Walter Khumalo won Player with Good Spirit Award while the Qwa-Qwa, Bethlehem and Sasolburg supporters won the award for the Biggest Supporter Branch.
