Key duo Lucas Thwala and Teko Modise are unlikely to feature in Orlando Pirates' clash with title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night (kick-off 7.30pm).

The Bafana Bafana stars returned from international duty carrying knocks, much to the dismay of coach Ruud Krol.

Defender Thwala has a knee strain, while the midfield maestro suffered a recurrence of a toe injury.

"I was not happy when I learnt that both players could not play against Ajax and could be out for the game against Sundowns. I will know on Monday what the extent of their injuries is," said the Dutchman.

"But I am not pleased at all at this turn of events."

Meanwhile, striker Thembinkosi Fanteni has been cleared to resume light training after sustaining an ankle injury.

The forward has already spent two weeks on the sidelines and will have to wait a while before undergoing sessions with the rest of his team-mates.

Bucs biokinetics Mandy-lee Solomons told the club's official website: "Fanteni resumed training this morning, but it is only light training and jogging at the moment. We are going to keep a close eye on his progress during the course of the week before confirming his readiness to train with the rest of the team.

"We are aware that many people where very concerned about him using the crutches, but I can state clearly now that it's nothing serious at all, except that he used the crutches to ensure that he doesn't put too much pressure on his ankle."

The good news for 'Bucs' is that Dennis Masina has recovered from a groin strain and is back in full training.
