United to extend lead?
Article By:
SuperSport United will look to extend their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership standings when they host Platinum Stars at the Super Stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday night (kick-off 7.30pm).
The defending PSL champions have been in fine form of late, having won six out of their last eight league games. Most recently they outplayed BidVest Wits defeating them 2-1 away from home.
United will now take on a Platinum Stars side who also looked to be finding some form of their own until they went down 1-0 to Moroka Swallows in their latest league match. Prior to that loss the 'Tycoons' had won two league matches in a row.
"I believe the good win over Sundowns did not auger well for us in the Swallows game. After beating the Brazilians, I think some of the players thought we had won the match against the Birds before it was even played, and hopefully they have now learnt a valuable lesson that you need to perform at the highest level in every game if
you are to win," Stars coach Steve Komphela told the club's official website.
He added: "We need to get back to winning ways on Wednesday against SuperSport United, which will be a very tough game. We know the type of game SuperSport play. Basic, but effective, and they are excellent on set-pieces which have been our Achilles heal of late. We need to put the pressure back onto them."
Presently, 12 places and 14 points separate the two tams on the Absa Premiership log. United are in first place on 26 points while the 'Tycoons' are in 13th spot on 12 points.
When these two teams met in the league last season SuperSport took all six points with a 2-0 win in the corresponding fixture and a 3-1 win in the reverse fixture.
Overall these two sides have faced each other 12 official league matches. Of those games United have won the majority, running out victorious on eight occasions. Stars have only ever beaten the Tshwane side
twice.
