In this edition of 'In the Hotseat', former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Roger de Sa tells us why the strikers the only people responsible for Bafana's recent goal-scoring drought.
Speaking to iafrica.com's Khaya Ndubane, the BidVest Wits coach also shares his thoughts on Benni McCarthy's inclusion in the squad and the upcoming Bafana camp in Brazil.
Q&A with Roger de Sa!
Khaya Ndubane (KN): Roger, Bafana have been experiencing a goal drought and the strikers have received a lot of criticism from the media.. Do you think it?s justified?
Roger de Sa (RDS): I don't think is fair to blame only the strikers for the goal drought in Bafana. Strikers need opportunities to be created in order for them to score, and if you look at Bafana, especially under Joel Santana, they were not creative enough. So how are the strikers going to score if there aren't opportunities created for them? Santana preferred a defensive approach and that left us short in the creative department so opportunities were few and far in between.
KN: In your opinion has this trend continued under the new coach Carlos Alberto Parreira...
RDS: It's too early to tell, but Bafana have played two games under Parreira and they didn't score a single goal, even though they had the once prolific goal-scorer Benni McCarthy in the squad. This shows that if you are not creative enough you can have the best striker in the world but you will still struggle to score.
KN: Speaking of Benni. What's your view on his recall?
RDS: I don't know the reasons behind Parreira decision to recall Benni. Maybe he called him because of his reputation and this seems to be the case when players are called into the Bafana squad. Players are not picked on form; they are picked because of their reputation. Personally, I don't think Benni should have been recalled yet because he is unfit and is not playing for his club.
KN: What do you think of Bafana's performance against Japan and Jamaica?
RDS: To be honest, I was not happy with Bafana's performance against these mediocre teams. We should have won both games, but our players simply didn't come to the party. But having said that, I think we should all give Parreira a chance to work with his team before passing judgement.
KN: And what are your expectations for Bafana in the 2010 World Cup?
RDS: At this stage we will be lucky if they go past the group stages, but there is still time? maybe things will change. Let's also hope that the World Cup draw will favour us as well.
KN: Bafana will have a camp in Brazil in March. What's your view on this arrangement?
RDS: I have been to Brazil and in my view we have everything that they have there, so it doesn't make sense to me as to why the team must camp in Brazil when we have similar facilities right here. Maybe Parreira has his own reasons to take the team to Brazil, but I would have had the camp right here in South Africa. The World Cup will be played in South Africa after all!
KN: Roger, thanks very much for your time and good luck with Wits.
RDS: Thanks Khaya.
