While Jomo Cosmos' position in the Premier League appears to be hanging by a thread, Cape Town's Vasco da Gama and Black Leopards on Sunday clinched top spots in the PSL's Coastal and Inland First Divisions respectively and placed themselves in line for promotion.

It was a day of high drama as the PSL's two subsidiary leagues were concluded, with one of the successful teams boasting a renowned name in international soccer ? namely Vasco who are named after Brazil's Vasco da Gama ? and another, who are familiar with Premier League football, coming through the road of much anxiety with their promotion prospects on track.

Vasco will now play Black Leopards in a two-leg play-off with the winner crowned First Division champions and, more importantly, securing an automatic place in next season's lucrative Premier League at the expense of this season's bottom side.

The losers, for their part, will join Nathi Lions and African Warriors, the two teams who finished second in their respective First Division leagues, as well as the side finishing second bottom in this season's Premier League to compete for the last vacant place among the 16 teams in next season's top division.

The big overall losers were Bay United, who as a result of only drawing with Thanda Zulu Royal missed out on one of the two top places in the Coastal First Division stream ? and surrendered all chance of returning to the Premier League in the process.

And this bitter pill materialising with a new World Cup stadium in their midst in Port Elizabeth and ready to be utilised for PSL games as well.

Although the battle between Cosmos and Mpumalanga Black Aces to avoid bottom place in the Premier League log ? and automatic relegation that goes with it ? is still in the balance with each team having three more games to play, Jomo Sono's club trail Aces by three points and are currently placed rock-bottom.
