Bay United's season of despair continued at East London's Absa Stadium where they were beaten 5-4 in a sudden death penalty shootout by Black Leopards in the Nedbank Cup clash on Saturday.
The game had to be decided on penalties after the teams drew 1-1 after extra time.
It was a happy return for Leopards coach Vladislav Heric who quit Bay earlier this season and they became his second PSL scalp. They defeated AmaZulu in the first round.
Bay found themselves under pressure during a fast flowing opening 45 minutes. Leopards most productive and dangerous players was right wing Mongezi Bobe who tested the home defence on a couple of occasions and must have given Bay coach Khabo Zondo a few anxious moments.
Bobe launched two crossed into the bay penalty area and both were deflected earlier in the first half.
The fact that both sides are bottom of the respective divisions made no difference as they produce an entertaining cup tie. Bay are at the foot of the PSL while Leopards - relegated from the PSL last season ? are at the bottom of the National First Division Inland Stream.
Leopards goalkeeper Posnet Omony did well to save a powerful free kick from Jermaine Christian in the 19th minute.
Omony the former Ugandan international and Bloemfontein Celtic goalkeeper denied Bay striker Jimmy Zakazaka the opening goal with a fine save in the 34th minute as the home side tried to wrestle in initiative from their visitors.
Leopards defender Tintswalo Tshabalala did well to deflect a good cross from veteran Macdonald Mukansi in the 32nd minute.
The second half came alive with both sides deciding to go for broke.
Bay's Linos Chalwe missed a sitter in 56th minute. Mukansi was given a free header two minute later but the shot went over the crossbar. Bobe was wide with a shot in the 60th minute. But Leopards best player set up teammate Thabo Mongalo who blasted Leopards into the lead on 65 minutes.
An inspired subsitution from Zondo helped the home side level matters when substitute Gareth Ncaca who had just come on equalised in the 74th minute.
The visitors could have won the match but Lethola Mofokeng missed after Tshabalala sent in an excellent cross in the 82nd minute and the match went into extra time.
Mofokeng again wasted another good chance to score when he was set up by Bobe but the Leopards striker shot wide with the goal at his mercy in the 101st minute.
With both sides tiring it came as no surprise when they match went to the penalty shootout lottery.
In other Nedbank Cup Last 16 match played on Saturday afternoon, Winners Park beat Ikapa Sporting to advance to the quarterfinal of this lucrative competition.
