National First Division (NFD) league title chasers Pretoria University scored one of the biggest upsets in South Africa Cup history when they defeated mighty Kaizer Chiefs 4-3 in the second round of the Nedbank Cup at Atteridgeville's Super Stadium on Saturday night.

The match was a thriller and full of controversy but there is no doubt that the better side, who were reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute, won.

'Amakhosi' have won more knockout competitions than any other club in the country but they were outdone and ambushed by a much more committed and quicker 'Tuks' outfit that on this performance would do well in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) next season ? that is if they win promotion.

Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral was sporting and congratulated 'Tuks' and said the better side won.

The match will be remembered for three of the strangest goals in a single match.

Chiefs were given a run around in the entertaining first half. The students surprised Chiefs with their incredible pace and took the lead when speedy midfielder Mthokozisi Yende outpaced the flatfooted 'Amakhosi' defence and blasted home past a bemused Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune after 23 minutes.

Three minutes later Yende almost profited from a poor clearance but his chip shot went past the post with Khune in no mans land.

But a terrible goalkeeping blunder by 'Tuks' keeper Siya Mngoma gifted Josta Dladla his fist goal for Chiefs since he joined them from Mamelodi Sundowns in January.

Mngona allowed Dladla's seemingly harmless cross into the penalty area slip through his fingers to level the tie after 28 minutes.

A minute later the 'Tuks' keeper made amends of sorts when he stopped a powerful close range shot from Abia Nale.

Chiefs striker Jose Torrealba headed a Dladla corner wide in the 42nd minute. But a minute later the Venezuelan striker bundled Chiefs into the lead. When challenged by the keeper Torrealba appeared to push the ball into the net with his hand but the goal was allowed to stand and Chiefs when into the break 2-1 ahead.

'Tuks' came close on two occasions early in the second half to level but their equaliser was rather bizarre. Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau stopped marking Phenyo Mongala ? claiming he heard a whistle ? and allowed the 'Tuks' midfielder tp pass him and to blast the ball in to the back of the net. It was a bad mistake from the experienced 'Amakhosi' skipper.

Then Khune rushed way out of his goal line to close down Thabo Moleko after 70 minutes who managed to lob the ball over the Chiefs 'keeper. Khune's recent poor form must be a worry to Bafana Bafana head coach Joel Santana with a friendly against Norway at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium next Saturday and Portugal in Switzerland three days later.

Khune seems to have lost confidence.

Chiefs were given a soft penalty by referee Thabo Nkosi when substitute Kaizer Motaung junior went down inside the Tuks penalty area seemingly without being tackled. The referee then sent off 'Tuks' skipper Obert Moyo for dissent during the fracas in the 78th minute.

But 'Tuks' showed character and scored the winner four minutes later when Mongala rounded Tau and stabbed home the winner in a goal mouth melee to give the NFD club a deserved place in the quarterfinals.
