Stars face acid test
Tue, 27 Oct 2009 12:00
Platinum Stars will try to continue their good fortunes when they host a rampant Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership clash at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Wednesday evening (kick-off 7.30pm).
Stars recently ended their four-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Free State Stars in their last league encounter. It was only the Tycoons? second win of the season and they will be hoping for another on Wednesday night.
The 'Tycoons', however, will be up against it as they are taking on an in-form Sundowns side who have scored nine goals in their last three league games.
They are fresh off a 2-0 win against Bloemfontein Celtic in their last league match and prior to that the 'Brazilians' played to a 2-2 draw against Chiefs, but it was a match they should have won as they squandered numerous golden goal scoring opportunities.
Their most emphatic win of the season came in the game before that where they thumped Maritzburg United 5-1.
Presently, seven places and seven points separate the two teams on the league table. Sundowns are in seventh place on 16 points while Stars are in 14th spot with only nine points.
There is not an extensive history between these two sides having only faced each other 12 times in official league matches since the 2003/04 season. Of those games Sundowns have won five and Stars three.
In the corresponding fixture last season the two teams played to a boring 0-0 draw. However, in the reverse fixture the 'Brazilians' had the better of the 'Tycoons', beating them 2-0.
