As part of the club's rebranding strategy, Platinum Stars have decided to change their nickname from 'Tycoons' to 'Dinaledi', which literally means 'Stars'.

According to a statement issued by the club's statement, the new nickname, 'Dinaledi', was launched at the home match against Mamelodi Sundowns on October 28.

"Following their acquisition by Royal Bafokeng Holdings, the club have been rebranded and one of the decisions taken was to move away from the 'Tycoons' nickname by which they had been known, as this was directly related to former owner Joseph 'Tycoon' Mapfulagasha, who sadly passed away in September," read the Stars statement.

"And so Stars decided that the general public would be the ones to choose the new nickname for the club, and held a competition on Radio Mafisa and North West FM asking fans to submit their suggestions for the new name.

Out of the hundreds of entries that came in, it was decided that the seTswana word 'Dinaledi', which literally means 'Stars' was the best fit for the team going forward," the statement continued.

Stars Managing Director Ian Riddick welcomed the new nickname.

"There have been a lot of changes at Platinum Stars in recent times and this is just another step into what we believe will be a bright future of the club," said Riddick.

"We listened to the fans and their suggestions and in the end chose Dinaledi, which is a wonderful nickname for the club," concluded Riddick.

Dinaledi has now been officially adopted as the nickname of the club and will appear on all future branding associated with the club.
