Second half goals from Tyren Arendse and Pikolethu Spelman secured Santos a 2-0 win over Platinum Stars at a cold and wet Coetzenburg Stadium on Saturday.

Unused to the wintry Cape conditions, Stars struggled to find their rhythm and efficiency early on, during which time Santos enjoyed the opening couple of chances of the match.

The impressive Erwin Isaacs had the first attempt on goal in the seventh minute, but headed over the cross bar, while eight minutes later he tried to lift the ball over Wayne Sandilands, but got his angles slightly wrong.

The Cape side continued to dominate the game until about the half hour mark, after which Stars began to grow in confidence.

However, the visitors' chances were mainly confined to long range efforts, and when they did break down the flanks, the likes of Tshepo Ramokala was unable to deliver telling balls into the box.

Just before the break, Stars did come close when Henrico Botes fired wide with a volley from 20-yards out.

There was little action in the early stages of the second half, with a Bradly Grobler shot over the bar and a near own goal when Sandilands failed to get contact on a back pass the only noteworthy moments early on.

The sizable home crowd was, however, rewarded for their patience when Arendse fired home from inside the box after Romano Scott's shot had rebounded off the post in the 74th minute.

In the 79th minute, Santos secured the cushion of a second goal when Spelman got his first goal for the club, heading home Graham King's free kick to secure a well earned three points for the on-form Cape Town team.
