The Orlando Stadium management got two wake up calls on Saturday night according to Premier Soccer League chief executive Kjetil Siem.

Siem admitted that the power failure just before the second-half of the prestigious MTN8 final between Golden Arrows and Ajax Cape Town was embarrassing for the league and sponsors.

He also said that he was disappointed in the poor state of the pitch. Arrows won the R8-million first prize after beating the Urban Warriors by a record 6-0.

However, Siem said that three hours before the 8.15pm kick the PSL and stadium management had done a check including the floodlighting and a back-up generator.

After the floodlights failed it was almost an hour before the game restarted.

"The problem is that these type of floodlights need 15 minutes to be recharged once they are switched back on again and then the teams requested an extra 20 to 25 minutes to warm up after the delay," Siem said.

"We agreed and thanked both teams for the co-operation. The matter was out of the PSL's control, but it should not have happened."

Siem said, although the power failure should not have happened, "it has happened all over the world, even in the European Champions League. But it was not good for the image of our game."

The PSL CEO added that this would act as a wake up call after R280 million was spent on refurbishing the stadium which will be used as a training venue for the 2010 World Cup finals.

He said that the state pitch was a major disappointment and it was another wake up call for the stadium management.

"Both teams wanted to play here (Orlando) because of the almost perfect pitch that hosted the semifinal between Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax," Siem said.

"But unfortunately the final was delayed to allow five Ajax players to compete in the World Youth Championships in Egypt last month.

"The pitch has been overused in the meantime and we have had a lot of rain in the area.

"We only rent this facility and will bring this matter to the attention of the stadium management. But we were not happy with the pitch, it was a disappointment for us."
