AmaZulu win at last
Sat, 03 Oct 2009 12:00
AmaZulu managed only their second win in the Absa Premiership when they walked away 2-1 winners over Moroka Swallows at the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Neil Tovey?s men were much the better team on the day, dictating play for long periods at a time. AmaZulu controlled ball possession and kept the Birds attack quiet until the last ten minutes of the match, where they were made to sweat.
'Usuthu's first chance on goal came as early as the eight minute after a long ball from the back found Sibusiso Hadebe unmarked 16 yards out from goal, but his effort was poor as it sailed well wide of the target.
Myron Shongwe should have put the home side in front when Greg Etafia spilled a cross right into his path, but he rushed his shot at an empty net and watched in agony as it went inches wide of the goal.
Shongwe should have scored again three minutes before the break when Marc Van Heerden provided an inch perfect cross to find him unmarked inside the 18 yard box. But the AmaZulu striker showed no deft finishing as he headed over the cross bar from only six yards out.
Just as AmaZulu looked to go into the half time break without any reward for their hard effort, their captain, Pere Ariweriyai stepped up and put his side in front in first half injury time.
Etafia spilled a cross from the left straight into the path of Ariweriyai on the edge of the 18 yard box. The Usuthu defender made no mistake, firing the ball into the top left-hand corner with a wonder strike, 1-0.
The second 45 minutes saw AmaZulu double their lead within 30 seconds of the referee starting the second half. Ntokozo Sikhakhane finished off a great passing movement when he fired home from just inside the 18 yard box. The keeper had no chance as Sikhakhane buried his shot low and hard into the side netting, 2-0.
Ngwenya should have put the game beyond doubt in the 63rd minute when he was through on goal and only had the Swallows keeper to beat. Etafia, however, did brilliantly, spreading himself wide to deny the 'Usuthu' striker.
AmaZulu, despite being in control for the majority of the match, were made to sweat for the final ten minutes when Morgan Shivambu pulled a goal back for Swallows in the 81st minute.
Lefa Tsutsulupa swung a free-kick into the 18 yard box which caught the Usuthu defence asleep. Shivambu took full advantage of this. heading home from only a couple of yards out, 2-1.
In the end the AmaZulu defence held out and Neil Tovey?s men earned only their second win of the league season to end a run of four consecutive losses.
