Swallows shock Chiefs
Wed, 21 Oct 2009 12:00
Kaizer Chiefs' Orlando Stadium jinx struck again when Moroka
Swallows edged out Amakhosi 2-1 in an Absa Premiership Soweto Derby
played on Wednesday night.
Chiefs have played five times at the newly renovated home of
soccer in Soweto this season and have yet to score a win.
It was the Birds' second win on the bounce and showed they are
on the mend after a bad start to the season. The defeated
Maritzburg United 2-0 at Dobsonville at the weekend.
A red card goes to the pitch which was in a shocking condition
and bad news for Saturday night's MTN8 final between Golden Arrows
and Ajax Cape Town at the same venue. It was bumpy and the players
battled to play decent soccer on it.
The Birds started well and caused Amakhosi problems with their
pace down the left flank. Sibusiso Khumalo hit the post when he
collected a defence splitting pass from his captain Lefa Tsutsulupa
in the eight minute.
Khumalo, the South African Under-20 star turned provider for the
Birds' opening goal when his cross once again found the suspect
Chiefs defence stranded and Morgan Shivambu had an easy job of
planting the ball into the back of the net in the 17th minute.
To their credit Chiefs fought back and managed to get their act
together and were level with a scorching goal from Reneilwe
Letsholonyane in the 26th minute that gave keeper Greg Etafia no
chance.
The Birds' Nigerian born keeper came to the rescue a minute
later when he did well to fist another powerful Letsholonyane's
shot from 25 metres over his crossbar.
At the other end Chiefs keeper Arthur Bartman did well to come
quickly off his line and throw his body at David Radebe's goal
bound shot in the 35th minute as Swallows tried to hit their hosts
on the break.
Amakhosi went for broke at the start of the second half but left
their shooting boots inside their dressingroom.
Letsholonyane was put through by Tinashe Nengomasha in the 50th
minute and with only Etafia to beat the Bafana midfielder blasted
his close range shot over the crossbar.
Then Kaizer Motaung Jnr missed two chances within a minute. The
first shot in the 57th minute was saved by Etafia but a minute
later he missed a sitter.
Motaung was put though near the six-yard box by Josta Dladla and
when he should have picked his spot in the back of the net he went
for power and blasted wide.
Swallows lanky striker Lungisani Ndlela forced Bartman to parry
his shot in the 62rd minute as Birds tried to hit their hosts on
the counter attack. But a minute later Ndlela made it 2-1 when he
connected substitute Ryan Botha's cross and volleyed home an
unstoppable shot.
Botha was lucky to get away with a lunging two-footed tackle on
defender Tshifiwa Mmbooi in the 66th minute. Referee Matthew Dyer
only spoke to the Birds winger when a yellow or red card looked a
better option.
Nhleko missed the sitter of the game in the 85th minute when he
struck the crossbar from less than a metre from the goal line after
a tremendous defence-splitting cross from Letsholonyane which about
summed up the home team's night.
