Thrilling from the beginning, the 2007/08 Telkom Knockout came to an equally spectacular conclusion at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night with Kaizer Chiefs snatching a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.
Now that the identity of the 2007 Telkom KO champions is known, soccer fans await with bated breath to discover the identity of the individual award winners.
The answer will be revealed at the awards ceremony to be held at the Wanderers Ballroom in Johannesburg on Tuesday at 11am.
A whopping R750,000 is on offer for individual players who made the Telkom Knockout the exhilarating competition it was.
And the big question must no doubt be who will walk away with the R200,000 prize money for the tournament's Most Valuable Player (Player of the Tournament).
Young Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune - included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the African Cup of Nations in Ghana next year - must no doubt be a serious contender. His penalty shootout heroics on Saturday served as the cherry on top for sterling performances throughout the tournament.
Khune, however, faces stiff competition from his role-model, Mamelodi Sundowns 'keeper Brian Baloyi, who pulled off some stunning saves for the 'Brazilians' during the match and many others en route to the final.
One of the two should also be in line for the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award, with Free State Stars' Kennedy Mwene's name also there.
As is usually the case, the Midfielder of the Tournament will be a stiffly-contested one. How the panel of judges separate Sundowns midfield general Esrom Nyandoro and his Zimbabwean compatriot Tinashe Nengomasha of Chiefs remains to be seen.
All of Siphiwe Tshabalala (Chiefs), Josta Dladla (Sundowns), and even John Maduka (Bloemfontein Celtic), should also be in contention, having set the tournament alight with some brilliant performances.
The fact that both Khune and Baloyi conceded a mere two goals during open play in the entire tournament speaks volumes of the goalkeepers' abilities. But this is also an indication of the brick wall-like defence in front of them and it is sure to be interesting which defender is crowned the tournament's best.
Will Derrick Spencer's Man-of-the-Match performance for Chiefs on Saturday be good enough to sway the judges' decision even though it was his one and only appearance in the tournament? James Matola was excellent for Free State Stars throughout, but will that crunching tackle on Sundowns midfielder Dillon Sheppard rule him out?
Matola, Celtic's Timothy Batabaire and Sundowns captain Benson Mhlongo are the contenders for this award.
Sadly, the Top Scorer and Hat-Trick in the final will not be conferred - Lerato Chabangu having missed out on the former that goes with a R150,000 prize money by a single goal. The Top Scorer award criterion demands that a player must have scored a minimum of five goals.
That notwithstanding, the Telkom KO once again lived up to its billing as the country's premier knockout competition and Tuesday's awards ceremony will provide a fitting conclusion!

Got something to say?
