Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung says he wasn't surprised when the team swept all before them at the Telkom Knockout awards ceremony on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, defender Jimmy Tau, midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane and striker Knowledge Musona were named as the best players in their respective positions.

The latter pair are also in contention for the player of the tournament accolade, which will be announced at next's year PSL awards evening.

Motaung said: "For them getting their honours means they are working hard. It is not for us, it is not about management. We only want the trophy so this is about the players. As a club we just want the trophy - we want the silverware.

"For us winning every award on offer means we are the best. We are the best," he insisted. "We were the best team in the tournament and we never conceded even a goal, hence Khune and Jimmy were the best defensively, so this is well-deserved. We deserve it."

Motaung also saluted head coach Vladimir Vermezovic, who had his critics when arriving at Naturena at the start of last season.

"When we brought him we knew, together with the chairman (Kaizer Motaung) that we were bringing in someone who could take the team to another level and also bring back the style and the flair that we need in the team. But people don't give you a chance when you start something," Motaung said.

"They were criticising him and they were criticising us. I mean they were saying who is he, but when we did the interview with him we knew we had the right man for the job.

"He has proven to everybody now that he is a good coach. Same as when we brought Musona, Sthembiso (Ngcobo) and the other guys who were criticised. But we have been in this business for a long time and we know what we are doing," Motaung concluded.
