Manchester United advanced to the semi-finals of the Europa League against Anderlecht last night. Marcus Rashford performed brilliantly, with a 2-1 victory and a comfortable 3-2 aggregate in favour of United. However, the journey towards this feat was not easy. Two of Man United’s stellar players were victim to being injured on the field, sending manager Jose Mourinho into a panic.
According to BBC Sport “Ibrahimovic, 35, landed awkwardly when challenging for the ball, while Rojo, 27, was replaced on 23 minutes after colliding with a visiting player.” It is suspected that both players suffered knee injuries. Blind replaced Rojo as he was carried off the field in a stretcher facing excruciating pain. After receiving medical assistance, Ibrahimovic was able to limp off the field and replaced by Martial.
Mourinho quoted his players’ physical progress as “fairly negative”, adding that “I want to wait but my feeling is not good for both. I want to wait and be optimistic but I am not.”
BBC Sport says Rojo now joins his teammates Smalling and Jones on United’s injury list. Mourinho is aware of the incapability to resume Sunday’s match, but urges his players to be “brave”. He further mentioned “We cannot do miracles. Miracles I don't expect - but you have to try to do everything to accelerate the process.”
After scoring 28 goals for United this season, Ibrahimovic’s injury has created an upheaval between players and supporters alike.
