The Champions League second leg semi-final between Juventus and Monaco saw Monaco looking to do the impossible, by overturning their 2-0 deficit. Although the first 15 minutes of the match held a fantastic start for Monaco, they slowly began to stagger as Juve turned from defence to attack. After 9 minutes into the game, Sami Khedira pulls a hamstring and leaves the field to be replaced by Marchisio. Monaco’s star player Kylian Mbappe constantly attacks Buffon and hits the goal post which proved to be offside, had he scored the goal.
With only 46 percent of the ball position for Juventus in the first half, at the 33rd minute, Mario Mandzukic scores to put Juventus in the lead, with Dani Alves assisting the goal. Not long after, Gonzalo Higuain, the scorer of both goals in the first leg scores an offside goal; again set up by Alves.
From provider to finisher, 34 year old Alves volleys the ball into the net on the stroke of half-time. A well-deserve goal that sent the Juve crowd roaring.
After the first half, Monaco has zero attempts on target, despite their powerful start. This brings the score to 2-0 at half-time, and a 4-0 aggregate for Juve.
Paulo Dybala also did not perform to his optimum after pickng up an injury the past weekend. He was then taken off at the 53rd minute and replaced with Juan Cuadrado, who showed determination as he came onto the field.
Monaco’s coach also made three changes in the second half with Benjamin Mendy sent off and replaced by Fabinho. Bernado Silva was also sent off with Lamar replacing him and Tiemoue Bakayoko off for the last change with Valere Germain coming onto the field. But this did not count in Monaco’s favour. As they relied on Mbappe to carry them to victory, he indeed scored at the 68th minute, but was not met with enthusiasm as the Monaco crowd knew that the end was near. The Juve crowd thereafter began cheering for the Monaco team, mocking them for the shameful deficit.
Juventus players began celebrating beforehand, knowing that victory was theirs. They ended the game with a 2-1 victory and a 4-1 aggregate, advancing to the Champions League final.
