In the Champions League second leg last night, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid fought for the chance to advance to the finals. Atletico’s 3-0 deficit saw the team attacking incessantly in the first half to score a goal. Their efforts were awarded with Saul’s header at the 12th minute, setting the score to 1-0.
After physical play in the game, Torres gets fouled and Griezmann secures the penalty for Atletico to lessen the deficit and set the score at 2-0.
Just before the end of the first half, Isco scores a much-needed goal for Real at the 42nd minute. Atletico could have however avoided this but their communication lacked on the field. Isco’s goal was successful because the 3 Atletico players were unaware of the Real Madrid player coming through. The position was therefore open for him to pass the ball comfortably to his teammate to set up the Real goal.
The night was filled with players looking to physically hurt one another deliberately, as well as a host of yellow cards that were issued. Amongst these offenders were Real captain Ramos and Atletico captain Gabi. Yellow cards were also handed to Danilo and Savic.
In the second half, one could see that Atletico lost their determination after Isco’s goal. Even though Simeone made so many player changes, it did not prove beneficial to the team.
The final score was 2-1 on the night in favour of Atletico; their 4-2 deficit eliminated their chances of winning. The journey to Cardiff will be met by Juventus and Real Madrid.
