Manchester United advances to the Europa League final after a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo last night. They won by 2-1 aggregate, facing Ajax Amsterdam in Stockholm in the final.
According to skysports, “Manchester United fans will remember this game for the outcome but not the performance.” Last night was not the best that United has performed in the season, but Mourinho seems to be happy with the end result. He responded to the match by saying ”This season has been so difficult, so if we manage to win the Europa League it will be amazing.”
United’s Fellaini scored an early goal in the 17th minute, which was assisted by Rashford. He has been a hot topic of conversation, either scoring or assisting with goals in the competition. “In the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it seems Rashford is now United's man for the big occasion”, says skysports. Celta Vigo however had majority of the ball possession in the early stages of the game.
United took a 1-0 lead to half time giving them a 2-0 aggregate.
The game also offered some excitement apart from playing football, with a clash between Eric Bailly and Roncaglia after he scored the equalizing goal. Both players were given red cards, which set the match to 10 players a side.
skyports further mentioned that “Ultimately, though, the only statistic that matters to United is that they have reached the seventh European cup final in their history. This unconvincing performance will be a distant memory if they finish the season with a second trophy and a place in next season's Champions League.”
With Ajax’s victory over Lyon in the semi-final last night, they seem to be a tough match for United. Who will reign victorious in Stockholm on 24 May? Stay tuned!
