Manchester United kicked off their Champions League campaign with a good start claiming a 3-0 victory over Basel. With a down pour of rain the fans still came out to fill Old Trafford as they embraced a return of Champions’ League football.
Paul Pogba started the night with great enthusiasm as he was given the captain's arm band, but less than 20 minutes into the game the captain seemed to have pulled is hamstring after going in to make a tackle. Ashley Young then took over the captaincy and Marouane Fellaini came on to replace the injured Pogba.
United dominated the match with Pogba on the field, but when he went off it seemed Basel found some ground and looked to attack more. This exposed them at the back whereupon Fellaini scored with the header from the cross by Young putting United up 1-0 and that’s how it stayed into half time.
When the second half commenced Basel appeared to be the better team as they attacked relentlessly, but United got a corner and Romelu Lukaku scored his sixth goal in his sixth appearance to put United up 2-0 exposing Basel’s weakness.
Marcus Rashford was dubbed as the super sub as he came on and scored United’s third goal of the night capping off a convincing 3-0 victory.
