Manager: Jacques Santini

Last season: 14th in Premiership

In: Pedro Mendes (FC Porto £2-million), Paul Robinson (Leeds £1.5-million), Sean Davis (Fulham £3-million), Noureddine Naybet (Deportivo La Coruna undisclosed)

Out: Helder Postiga (FC Porto £5-million), Christian Ziege (Borussia Mon'gladbach free), Darren Anderton (Birmingham free), Gustavo Poyet (released)

Outlook: Tottenham fans do not expect to see their side scraping around in the bottom half of the table in the final weeks of the season. That however was the reality at the end of the last campaign and there are plenty of the Tottenham faithful who fear an equally ignominious end to this one.

France's lacklustre showing at Euro 2004 did nothing to convince doubters that Jacques Santini is the man to lead Spurs out of the shadow of north London rivals Arsenal, even if he can forge a working relationship with Sports Director Frank Arnesen.

The potential for conflict is obvious but Spurs should at least be more resilient in midfield with the arrival of Pedro Mendes from European champions Porto and Sean Davis from Fulham.

Key player: Robbie Keane: If the Ireland striker can find his best form and an understanding with Fredi Kanoute, Spurs should be spared relegation anxiety next Spring.
